}}<p>ایالتی در شمال غربی هند، هممرز پاکستان، با ۵۰,۳۶۲ کیلومتر مربع مساحت و ۲۴,۴۷۵,۰۰۰ نفر جمعیت (۲۰۰۱). مرکز آن چندیگره۱ و بزرگترین شهر آن آمریتسار۲ است. تولید پارچه و چرخ خیاطی، کشت گندم، برنج، شکر، ذرت، ارزن، جو، و پنبه در این ایالت رواج دارد. رودهای ساتلج۳ و بئاس۴، ریزابههای سِند۵، در جلگهای آبرفتی۶ با شیب ملایم جریان دارند که بخش عمدۀ ایالت را تشکیل میدهد. پنجاب ناحیهای عمدتاً کشاورزی است که غلات از طریق کشت آبی در آن پرورش مییابد. ویرانههایی از تمدن درۀ سِند۷ (۱۶۰۰ـ۲۵۰۰پم) در پنجاب برجا مانده است. شهرهای مهم آن عبارتاند از آمریتسار، جلندهر۸، فریدکوت۹، و لودیانا۱۰. زبان اصلی این ایالت پنجابی۱۱، و ادیان عمدۀ آن سیک۱۲ و هندو است. ناآرامیهای ۱۹۱۹ به شورشهای پنجاب (معروف به کشتار آمریتسار۱۳) انجامید. ایالت کنونی با تقسیم هند در ۱۹۴۷ تشکیل شد. پنجاب هند۱۴ بعدها به سه منطقه تقسیم شد: هیماچال پرادش۱۵، پاتیالا و اتحادیه ایالتهای پنجاب شرقی۱۶، و ایالت پنجاب شرقی۱۷. در ۱۹۵۶، دو ایالت اخیر ادغام شدند و پنجاب هند را تشکیل دادند، که در ۱۹۶۶ براساس خطوط زبانی به سه ایالت هیماچال پرداش و هاریانا۱۸ با اکثریت جمعیت هند، و ایالت پنجاب تشکیل شد، که ۶۰ درصد از جمعیت آن سیکهای پنجابی زباناند. مرکز ایالتهای هریانا و پنجاب شهر چندیگره است.</p>Chandigarh<br />
